Weave - Crêpe de Chine
Crêpe de Chine is the quality for designs that are meant to appear fluid, elegant, and feminine. Many designers choose Crêpe de Chine because the fabric drapes softly, has a fine matte sheen, and supports both sophisticated and everyday looks equally well. Ideal if you're looking for a lightweight, high-quality fabric with a grainy texture for blouses, dresses, skirts, or festive fashion. (More...)
Crêpe de Chine is a classic crepe fabric with a fine, slightly grainy surface that originally comes from China and is traditionally woven from silk. The typical structure is created by gently overtwisted weft yarns, which give the fabric its gently wavy character, flowing drape, and matte elegant sheen. Depending on its finish, Crêpe de Chine can appear silky-shiny, softly draping, or somewhat firmer, for example as a silk, viscose, or polyester variant. The fabric is mainly used for blouses, dresses, skirts, scarves, bridal wear, and fine lining fabrics.
Typical fabric types:
- Silk Crêpe de Chine
- Polyester Crêpe de Chine
- Viscose Crêpe de Chine
- Crinkle Crêpe de Chine
- Printed and solid Crêpe de Chine
Important properties:
Crêpe de Chine is light, soft, and looks classy and matte shimmering thanks to its fine crepe structure. Many qualities drape beautifully and are suitable for elegant blouses, dresses, scarves, and evening wear. The fabric displays colors clearly and brilliantly and wrinkles less than pure silk in smooth weaves. At the same time, Crêpe de Chine is more sensitive to heat, friction, and harsh detergents than more robust qualities, so handling and care should be a little more gentle.
Care instructions:
Crêpe de Chine should be cared for gently and not exposed to high heat so that its sheen, drape, and surface are preserved. Pure silk is usually only suitable for handwashing or professional cleaning, while polyester and viscose versions often tolerate a gentle wash cycle at 30 degrees. When ironing, use only a low temperature, iron slightly damp, and best on the reverse side or with a cloth. Dryer heat, strong spinning, and harsh detergents should be avoided.
